Guests staying at Springbank Cottage, our self catering holiday let in Elgol, can use resources that form part of our environmental activities offer of which bat detecting is one.
Bats are fascinating creatures but how much do know about their behaviour and how do you get close to bats? Well standing out in the dark doing some bat detecting is certainly one way of finding out a bit more about them.
What you can do
- Bat detecting involves going out at as dusk falls and try to identify bats flying using a bat detector, a device that makes bat echolocation calls audible to humans.
Where to do it
- Practice in the garden.
- Bats occur in a wide variety of habitats, including near fresh water.
What we provide
- Magenta Bat Mk11b Bat Detector.
- Bat Detective Guide with CD of bat calls to listen for.
Advice about the activity
- Bats hibernate for about half of the year, so late spring and summer are the best times for this activity.
- It is mainly the two species of pipistrelle bat that are found locally and it takes practice to distinguish between the two.
- Working out how the bat detector actually works is fascinating in itself!
Things to consider
- Using torches to see where you are going may deter the bats.
So, if you are thinking about a trip to Skye and you want more than just a âstandardâ holiday cottage, take a closer look. We hope you will be surprised by how much is on offer during a stay at Springbank Cottage.
